Wilshire Grand Center: Tallest Building West of the Mississippi

The 16th annual lecture took place on September 18, 2017 and was a huge success!  We raised over $47,000 and had over 500 attendees turn out to listen to a terrific presentation.  Thanks to all for your continued support!

This annual lecture honors Professor Emeritus Dr. Paul Zia, former professor and department head of NC State’s Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, and a structural engineer who is eminent in research, professional society leadership and practice.

Presenters include Ms. Tammy Jow, project director and senior designer of AC Martin; Mr. Todd Whisenhunt, S.E., P.E., vice president of Thornton Tomasetti and an NC State alumnus; and Mr. Brendan Murphy, vice president and operations manager at Turner Construction. The presenters will discuss various topics related to the design and construction of the 73-story structure in Los Angeles including:

  • Unique architectural features of the building

  • Structural design, including mass concrete design and lateral force resisting system

  • Coordination efforts for the foundation concrete pour, which was placed during a continuous 18.5-hour period. This set the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous foundation concrete pour.
