The 18th Annual Paul Zia Distinguished Lecture, “Design & Construction of the SR 99 Tunnel in Seattle: The Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement,” will be presented on Monday, September 23, 2019, at 3 p.m. at the Stewart Theatre located in the Talley Student Union on the campus of North Carolina State University. This annual lecture honors Professor Emeritus Dr. Paul Zia, former professor and department head of NC State’s Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, and a structural engineer who is eminent in research, professional society leadership and practice.
This year’s presenters include Dr. Yang Jiang, PE, Principal Engineer of HNTB; and Dr. Mike Wongkaew, PE, SE, Associate Vice President and National Tunnel Practice Lead of HNTB. The presenters will discuss various topics related to the design and construction the 2-mile double-decker tunnel under downtown Seattle:
• Structural design and construction of the 57.5-ft diameter tunnel
• Owner considerations for the $3.3 billion project
